  HOMELIFE BEFORE ROSE   Piers grew up in the poorer part of Spikemuth, with his mom as his sole parental figure. His mother was kind to him for the most part, but he was vaguely aware that sometimes, she got nicer things for herself than he did, and her string of boyfriends weren't anything to write home about.He was parentified pretty heavily, especially after Marnie's birth.
Before that, he was the therapist, caretaker, and babysitter for his mom. Every breakup, he heard the nasty details of. Every hangover, he was the one holding her hair away from her face and making sure she drank water and had a greasy breakfast. Every night she passed out drinking with her boyfriend, he sat vigilantly as a bodyguard to make sure her boyfriends left as peacefully as they came. And as thanks, she sat idly by when these men tried to parent him even though he didn't even know their names.Shortly after Marnie's birth, their mother succumbed to pressure of being a single mother. Piers came home from school and found a crying Marnie and his mother dead at her own hands. She left an 11 year old Piers to deal with planning her funeral and he hated her. He hated her for everything. His relatives didn't want them, his birth father was in the wind, and Marnie's birth father was completely unknown.Instead, Piers was left to live in the very slumhole flat that he'd found his mother's body in, struggling to raise a few month old baby by himself while relatives called him ungrateful for them paying his rent and bills.Piers was floundering. The money they sent for rent and bills were barely enough for food, and he was forced to do odd jobs around Spikemuth to afford baby formula and things Marnie and his Pokemon needed while sacrificing his own health. He had a full meltdown when his Zigzagoon, Pistol, started rationing his own food to share his berries and fruit with Piers.

  CHILDHOOD  
It was during this time that he met the Chairman at a promotional event for that Gym Season. Rose took him under his wing, seemingly taking pity on the boy after running into him and an infant Marnie at a grocery store, and was quick to help Piers stay on his feet and care for Marnie. No one in Piers's family contested Rose when he approached them about informally adopting the two.After that, while Piers didn't live with Rose proper, he and Marnier were given a flat in the higher end of Spikemuth, food, an allowance, babysitters, tutors. He and Marnie wanted for nothing and Rose doted on Piers especially.Back then, Rose was Piers's hero, and he would have done anything if it meant repaying him for his kindness. And he did.He spent the next year training harder than he ever had, determined to prove to Rose that his kindness wasn't wasted. As a result, he sacrificed a lot and was praised for it at every turn.Piers, after practically being raised by Rose, was sponsored for the Gym Challenge season when he was 13, and won.It was the happiest day of his life, and he hoped that his stance as Champion would keep Spikemuth afloat as funding to that city and its Gym had long since started dwindling. It was hard work, tiring, and Marnie spent most of her time with babysitters while Piers was kept busy with his duties as Champion.The only good thing was that he was finally allowed to transition.As expected though, that also became a selling point to sponsors and everyday people.Everyone knew he was trans before he'd even finished taking his first T shot. Piers hated that everyone knew his business, but Rose's PR team knew best. Of course, none of them had to deal with the online discourse or the constant prying, invasive questions during interviews on global television.

  CHAMPION ::   Burnout set in quick, and he was starting to see the cracks in the charmed life he was living. Rose certainly did put on a good show of being a good and kind person, that was for sure. But behind closed doors, he was almost obsessively driven for some goal that Piers couldn't fully begin to fathom. He worked Piers like a dog, pushed him to his limits and beyond and was dispondant when Piers broke down and acted like any other child would in that situation.He was starting to feel more and more like a puppet on a string and like he'd been played.His depression worsened, and he began to wonder if any of this was worth it. But he had to keep going; he had a sister to support, even if they barely knew each other.The workload, the stress of never being able to see his sister - he'll never get back missing her first steps, her first words, her first day at school. - finally got to him and he had no support system to lean on. Rose always apologized, offered him days off, but those days off were paid back ten fold in a backlog of work. And every time he reached out to Rose, his only lifeline, he was brushed off and told to make an appointment with a therapist.Of course, every scheduled appointment was cancelled because it was deemed less important.He was told to find a way to manage himself. Quitting wasn't an option, and neither was losing; both meant he and Marnie were homeless. And Rose had kept him sheltered, naive, unprepared for a world without stable finances. And he made sure Piers knew that.Every time Piers began to crumble, it was always followed by a subtle nod to how nice Marnie's school was. How nice their flat was. How Piers was terrible with money, and wouldn't know how to balance a checkbook or save. How Marnie was so bright and had a bright future.She could go to college even!So Piers had to stand up and keep moving.He was paid well, and had asked Rose, in the beginning, to dock his pay to cover the flat, the school, the babysitters, all because Piers wanted to repay him._{Why was the flat so damn expensive? Why did he trust Rose not to screw him over?}He was barely sleeping, barely able to have fun or even spend time with his sister.The only thing he had were pills.First it was caffeine pills. Then stronger, less legal things. Anything to keep moving and have the energy to do what he needed to do. Worse still was that he got them from league staff, who slipped them to him when they thought Rose wasn't looking.And yet, Piers still cared about Rose and trusted him. He was the only person that he could trust, despite the control and abuse. It eventually became a crush, and Piers would have done anything to keep Rose's love and affection.

During Piers's 15th birthday, Piers, while drunk off swiped drinks, was taken away from the party by Rose and Piers kissed him. They never returned to the party. It became habit to disappear together after that, though no one questioned anything.But eventually, Piers finally got sense knocked into him when, during an argument with Rose, Rose slapped him. It was the first and only time he'd been struck and that was when he finally realized how wrong the situation was.

He started acting out, skipping appointments and meetings in favor of playing guitar and spending time with Marnie. He still battled and won when he needed to, fought like his life was on the line. Because it was; he didn't care about Rose anymore, he just cared about Marnie. She, at least, had a good future ahead of her, and he could withstand everything Rose put him through.As long as she was safe, taken care, that was all that mattered.After the last Championship match, it was contract renewal time. And Piers, when it came time to renew his contract, actually read it this time. He and Rose fought, and a deal was struck:"As long as you're Champion, Spikemuth's gym will get the funding it needs. That's the best I could do."Of course, deals like that always had fine print.And the next year, when Piers was 16, Rose sponsored another kid. Leon. A young and naive savant with Pokemon, and that year Piers lost and truly realized how expendable he really was, and that he'd been played and replaced by someone who was so much more innocent than Piers had been when Rose took him in. He ran off the field without shaking Leon's hand, hiding in the stadium restroom and vomiting.Rose followed him, scolding him for being a sore loser. Despite taking care of him for five years and using him, Rose threw him aside with only a smile and a pitying remark that he hoped that Marnie, at least, would thrive.Of course Piers punched him for that, left him with a split lip and bruise on his jaw. He promised Rose that if Rose or anyone hurt Leon, Piers would hunt him down and kill him himself.After leaving the stadium, Piers tracked Leon's mom down, tried to warn her about the kind of monster Rose was, but Rose's PR team reached her - and everyone - before he could. Every reporter, news station, and gym leader he spoke to thought he was just a sore loser who was determined to ruin the Chairman's reputation. Piers's name was in ruins before the year was even over, and all Piers could do was weather the storm. He even tried to talk to Leon, but Rose poisoned the kid against him, and Leon was unwilling to listen.The only person who believed him was the then current Spikemuth Gym leader.

  ADULTHOOD   A handful of years later, he would become Gym Leader, but until then, he focused primarily on his music, his activism against Macros Cosmo (and Rose), and Marnie. He tried his best to make sure that she was loved.But he was restless, and he started partying when he had time. He did his best to not be drunk or inebriated around her, always tried to keep his promises.And as expected, he fucked up. Not often, though it always felt world-ending whenever it happened. He broke promises here and there, sometimes forgot dinner, sometimes stayed too long with some guy from the club. Sometimes he and Marnie would fight.Their fighting was only made worse when he refused to let her participate in the Gym Challenge; he knew she was strong. Strong enough to be Champion if given the chance. He knew how it had sucked him dry, and what kind of monster Rose was, and he couldn't let her be near him. Unfortunately, she went behind his back and got another gym leader to sponsor her.They didn't talk for a week, and his fans - Team Yell - ended up taking it upon themselves to try and fix the divide. They though Piers was afraid that Marnie would lose, unaware that them trying to help Marnie win was causing more hurt than good to both siblings.Thankfully, none of that mattered in the end.Currently, after the Darkest Day and Rose's imprisonment, Piers runs the Gym with Marnie. She pushes him to go out sometimes beyond Galar, encouraging him to try and travel and perform at smaller venues around the world because she knows his music is genuine, and she believes he's capable of more than just hiding in his shithole apartment and playing at seedy clubs.
